Millionths of users all around the world have found their computers infected by malware software. These hostile programs are used or programmed by hackers to collect sensitive data, obtain access to private computer systems or to simply disturb the work of the electronic devise. A research conducted by Symantec Corporation concluded “the release rate of malicious code and other unwanted programs may be exceeding that of legitimate software applications”.
Android security applications were created as an anti-malware strategy. One of the most popular ones is Avast Mobile Security, which has 117 followers on twitter and 3327590 “likes” on facebook. Its user interface can currently be found in 41 languages. Anybody who uses Microsoft Window, Mac OSX or Linux can download it.
Avast (which stands for Anti-Virus Advanced Set) is a freemium antivirus software. Avast Marketing Director, Milos Korenko, stated “There might be a paid version in the future but that won’t have an impact on the free version. It will continue to be available and loaded with features”.
This Android security application has a very strong advertisement detector. The users can prevent up to seven categories of possible ads from appear on their electronic devises. Avast immediately warns the users when they install an application about harmful behaviors, giving the users the chance to take action and get rid of bothersome ads. The users can configure Avast to issue such warnings based on their personal preferences.
Another feature is the “On demand scanning”. It’s a preventive feature that serves to get rid of bad or infected files from an Android smartphone. The users can set the application to scan the phone as they sleep.
The “Backup app” of Avast allows users to back up their contents, call logs, image files and SMS. With the premium version of this feature, users can also back up and protect videos and audio files. If the smartphone gets stolen, the user can restore all personal material in Google Drive Free storage.
And, with Avast App Manager, the users can see the applications that are running, monitor their permissions and check if they show ads. If you are already looking for ways on how to save the battery on your device, controlling such operations through Avast can be helpful. What’s more, users with rooted devises can block the app’s access to some of their networks and save money with their data plan.
Avast was first thought by Pavel Budis, Pavel Budis. In 1988 he found a sample of the Vienna Virus and created a program to remove it. He then worked together with a colleague to start ALWIL Software. In 1991, ALWIL Software stopped being a cooperative and became a company. In 1994 Avast won Virus Bulletin’s VB100 awards in all testing categories, becoming one of the first three antimalware software to win that award. By 2004 Avast reached one million users. Now Avast protects over 170 million Android smartphones, PCs and Macs.
In march 2012, CNTE-Download.com gave this Android security program the “Editors’ Choice Award”. That same year, Independent testing AV-comparatives gave their highest rating (Advanced +) to Avast in the “On Demand Detection Test” category.
